Massage Oils and Lotions for a Prenatal Massage

Pregnancy is one of the most important times in a woman’s life. It can also be one of the most uncomfortable times. From morning sickness during the first trimester to never ending backache during the third and final trimester, most women experience a slew of body pains and aches that they never did before they became pregnant. A prenatal massage can be a welcome respite from these body pains for a pregnant woman. Massage oils and lotions can make a prenatal massage feel even more relaxing, but there are a couple of tips to keep in mind when giving, or receiving, a prenatal massage.

1. Before a prenatal massage begins, the mother-to-be should find a comfortable position that is also safe for baby. A back position can lead to poor circulation in the third trimester, and most stomach positions are also not practical by the second trimester when the baby bump is larger. The best position for a prenatal massage is often to have a mother lie on her side with a pillow between her legs.

2. Massage oils and lotions can take a massage to the next level, but some pregnant women are more sensitive to smells when they are pregnant. A masseuse should ask the mother-to-be whether they have noticed if they are sensitive to smells. When in doubt a masseuse should use massage oils and lotions with no smell that way the new mom won’t feel unwell at any point during her massage.

3. A prenatal massage should focus on specific areas where pregnant women are likely to be sore or achy. At the same time, a masseuse should avoid certain areas that are thought to be triggers for contractions. Areas to focus on during a pregnancy massage are the lower back, neck, shoulders, legs, calves, and feet. Areas to avoid include the ankles and anywhere near the stomach. Massage therapists should always make sure that the massage is not causing pain or discomfort. If a pregnant woman starts to seem uncomfortable during a prenatal massage, the masseuse should stop immediately and offer them a glass of water. At all times during a prenatal massage the focus should be on making a pregnant woman feel good.

A prenatal massage can be just the thing that a woman needs when she is feeling uncomfortable. Massage can help pregnant women feel more in touch with their bodies and can be relaxing during times of stress. Prenatal massage is a great tool for pregnant women to use during any trimester so that they can feel as great on the outside as they do on the inside.
