Although summer seems like a million miles away with winter upon us, now is the time to secure your shares for the summer’s bounty from DeLano Farms.
DeLano Farms is a local Kalamazoo Community Supported Agriculture project that is offering shares for sale to the general public. DeLano Farms is associated with the Kalamazoo Nature Center.
CSA gives its members weekly pick-ups filled with fresh seasonal items straight from the farm. This year’s shareholders will get a total of 23 weeks of food. The program runs for 21 weeks from late May 2012 to October 2012. Plus, members get another pick up just before Thanksgiving and one more before Christmas.
This year’s rate is $450 for members of the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Non-members pay $510 plus you get a one-year membership to the nature center to enjoy along with your pick ups. That pricing works out to about $19.56-$22.17 per week for fresh CSA offerings. Many families spend far more than that at the grocery store.
The DeLano Farms offerings are grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. The amount you receive varies by the time of year and seasonal offerings.
You must fill out an application for the shares. Details: http://www.naturecenter.org/DeLanoFarms.aspx
