The Kalamazoo Public Schools is responsible for administrating all public education centers within their district. This includes a very wide range of elementary schools and middle schools, as well as three high schools. As the area is home to almost 100,000 people, the needs of students have grown considerably. In order to meet the growing demand, particularly for younger students, quite a few new schools have been constructed in recent years.
In addition, Western Michigan University is found within the city, and this school offers four different campuses. These are East Campus, West Campus, Parkview Campus and Oakland Drive Campus. When moving to the city, it’s advisable to check which campus you (or your children) will be attending prior to locating a home in the city. Kalamazoo College is also located within the city. This was one of the very first colleges established in the state and has a considerable history of excellence. The college is also located quite near to Western Michigan University, and was ranked top in Study Abroad programs.
Kalamazoo Valley Community College is located within the city, as is Davenport University. The Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center also calls the city home. Each of these offers quality education options for students, and provides for a variety of needs where higher education is concerned.
The Kalamazoo Public Schools administers a total of three different high schools within the city limits, as well. These are Loy Norrix High School, Central High School and Phoenix High School. Loy Norrix High School is a leader in school reform, and features several innovative initiatives aimed at improving the skills and knowledge of their students. Central High School is located on Drake Road, and has finished construction of a new dance studio, as well as a new entrance to Thomas Stadium. Phoenix High School is also a leader in changing education for students, and offers individualized programs for each student to maximize their education potential.
Kalamazoo Public Schools also administers a number of elementary and middle schools. To date, there are 17 elementary schools within the district, and 5 middle schools spread throughout the city. Each of these schools serves a specific geographic area of the city. As you can see from the number of elementary schools, the number of younger students has increased considerably. This is expected to lead to the construction of more middle schools in the near future.
